i really made a supreme effort at this game. i started off with quick expansion to 4 cities to capture bronze. i sighted 3 civs around me, with france suffering from a land pinch from the start, but india quite strong and virtually on top of me. i figured this to be the biggest threat, so my first assault cut through india and captured most of their cities, including a holy city of the land's religion. so in terms of power and economy i was off to a powerful start.

i cut through france in almost no time and forced them to capitulate. i eventually also forced the zulus, the indians, and the americans to capitulate.

meanwhile, england had grown into a power house and had forced spain, china, and germany to capitulate. this was a problem because germany was fairly powerful and situated in the lower right of my corner. so any war effort would be two front, and my vassals weren't contributing much. even worse, despite owning 50% of the land in the world, there was no oil in any of my territories. so i had to decide on whether to go on world war to get oil, or try to ride out peace.

i cranked up espionage to try to assess my situation, and was dismayed. england had begun with a huge swathe of land to expand into, and owned something like 1/3 of the world as pure english territories. so they got a huge lead, and thus were able to capture the more powerful civs as vassals. the disparity in our power graphs was enourmous. so, there was no way i could go to war and get the oil to catch up, but on the other hand, with that kind of difference, there wasno way theywouldn't declare on me.

so i played it out for a few turns and hoped for htebest, but england and the rest of the world declared on me shortly afterwards. once i saw the size of their stacks, i quit, no point in playing this one out.

i was quite disappointed in how this game turned out; i had played quite aggressively and made a lot of gains, and also had some pretty good luck. but i couldn't over come that land advantage that england had.
