I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

Thanks... I got extremely lucky with goodie huts at the start of the game -- if I remember right, first I got a scout to uncover more goodie huts more quickly, then I got a settler (!) which let me start my 2nd city even before my 1st city had popped out a worker. Then shortly after that I got Bronze Working, which really helped develop the area around the start cities. With that much of an early advantage, plus the trait that reduces city maintenance, it was easy to stay ahead of the AI in territory and tech.

I only fought one brief war fairly early on, and it was settled quickly due to my superior production capacity and tech lead. Other than that it was just expand, expand, expand and race up the tech tree.
