So, the theme here, warmongers galore, really doesn't fit with my play style. I find Civ style warfare very tedious if it continues for more than a couple dozen turns.

This game predictably degenerated into almost constant warfare. While it was easy to defend as the King of Defense, and while I was able to make good advantage of Landsknechts, I just couldn't bear to keep fighting war after war with Alex and Stalin (I beat back Ragnar pretty early, since he was so close). It just seemed to drag on and on and got rather unfun for me.

    [edit]

The map was a bit odd, too. I liked the options, but because of the random continents I think we ended up with "snaky" continents which are my least favorite. Naval warfare is bad enough without ships taking forever to get from here to there due to snaky paths. This map wasn't even possible to circumnavigate from one side (though I got the ship movement bonus nonetheless!).

I did like the challenge of the starting spot, with no easy metal nearby and having to make use of arctic terrain to expand. The snake-shaped landmass made it hellish to get reinforcements from one place to another, though.

I has some kind of an email snafu with Rob so my save didn't get thru but I did finish and win, a space ship victory.

I archer rushed Ragnar early to gain space, then out built everyone who was close to me. I blocked the Isthmus's and had a nice area to develop and grow.

I maintained a decent level of military to discourage the AI going after a "weak Neighbor", and was eventually able to outbuild them and win the space race.

In this case it helped having neighbors beating on each other.

I didn't maintain enough military and Ragnar overwhelmed me.

Plus, not knowing that we were playing "the King of Defense" I attacked a stack of his that got close to my capital and got burned.

        ACK!

I went out early and scouted and it was fairly obvious he had the better starting spot to expand.

So it was archer rush time.

          It seemed to work well.

I now routinely watch the statistics page, and monitor my "soldiers" level vs the best average and worst of my neighbors. I dont have to be "best" but I try to maintain "above average" and close to "best". That way it seems like I pick the wars instead of the wars picking me
