a huge Terra map will likely start crashing to desktop around 1900AD for me. Low resolution graphics checked, animations off, no movies, no Blue Marble MOD, etc. anything else with game settings I should do to avoid CTD? I've read all the civfanatics forums threads I could find about this problem.Comment

There may not be much else you can do, short of a hardware upgrade. I had the same problem on my old PC. It has plenty of RAM, but an over-stressed video card.
Save often, or better yet turn on autosave every turn. If you notice ANY video glitches in the terrain or on units, save the game, and exit to desktop. You'll need to restart the game once it gets squirrelly. Sometimes you can catch it before a CTD, and a save/restart game is a whole lot better than a CTD and restart of system.
Oh, turn off "view enemy moves" and the like, so your screen doesn't have to pan around as much. That seems to be one of the big killers.Comment

Turn off combat animations - downgrade all the graphics options.
Turning off enemy moves will help as well - I sometimes have to do this on my PC - but not my laptop.
And yes - save often - and save up for an upgrade - sorry to say.I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.Comment
