Rob and Nugog, Are you ramping up the difficulty of the games ? I found this to discouraging to finish.
Here's my more or less turn by turn report:
    Sully sallies forth

I establish Istanbul right where the settler is. Warrior gets 52 gold from first village and a scout from the second, which means the original warrior car return to guard the capital with a second that I "built" to go with the settler I'll get fairly soon.
As usual, I go for pottery first andset the scout to exploring -- as I recall, scouts generally do better than warriors at getting good stuff from villages.
The 2nd tech I'll study is fishing, since that seafood will come in handy.
At turn 11, I encounter Bowdecia, as we old Saxons used to call her. Catch case of crabs.
Turn 13 start researching hunting, for scouts and another defensive unit.
Turn 17 start on archery and my scout kills a lion, almost bare handed.
Turn 22 get the settler and head northeast to settle on a hill between some gems and sugar. Start on a barracks for better defenders and to give Istanbul time to grow. Start on sailing.
Turn 25 establish Edirne and start on a workboat, also cut research budget to 90% to stop bleeding of treasury.
Turn 30, I've sent the scout to explore the interior, instead of wandering only along the coast. He was threatened by a lion perched on a huge bolder and I let him run to the nearest high ground. We'll see iof the cat follows.
Turn 32, Istanbul and Edirne are finally growing and I start on mining.
Turn 36, start on bronze working. Haven't encountered any more villages -- grr.
T39: finally have my workboat and send it to harvest the Bounty of the Sea, as the Food section would put it. EDirne is training a worker.
T40: Scout does in a cougar and gains experience -- I give him forest defense. Sid tells me to create a settler. Not yet, mate.
T44: I set scout to exploring again, in the hope he'll find a bloody village. Also look into masonry, since I see inland a likely city site waiting to be quarried.
T48: Get bronze working start on iron working, since I'll certainly need swordsmen.
T50: Scout whacks a lion, big excitement. Oops, somewhere a little ways back I got the worker at Edirne and started on anarcher. Worker's built a mine and started on another at Edirne.
T54: Archer defending Edirne, will build another workboat before a settler.
T59: achieve iron working and start on writing. Never did see any copper with bronze, but spy an iron outcropping inland. Need to glom onto that. Oh, also closer on coast near Istanbul.
T64: I forgot to mention encountering Shaka and Tokugawa. Also the the boat is fishing for Istanbul and the worker is cultivating corn for the capital. Soon there'll be more food for growth.
T66: Start on alphabet. I like those libraries and anyway ned to beeline to education to make use of Philosophical university benny.
T69: Meet Montezuma build granary in Istanbul, start on a worker.
T74: Scout, defending on high ground, whacks a warrior and gains a point.
T78: Ankara founded on coast right next to iron.
T79: EDirne has a granary and starts on another worker.
T92: VAlorour defenders whack 2 barb warriors outside Istanbul. Meanwhile I've accepted open borders with all other players. Am building a library in EDirne. And have a settler ready to head inland for quarrying.
T94: Now I got math and am backtracking for some religion. Meet the scrawny G. Khan, who isthe top dog right now.
T98: Capital axeman whacks a barb warrior; Edirne starts on monument, to expand.
T101: Found Bursa ESE and inland of Istanbul. DAmn barb archer kills my Edirne defener archer and whacks a mine. Rushing troops to EDirne!
T103: Defenders at Ankara and EDirne whack marauding barbs.
By T193, it's more like Sully sallies 19th rather than 4th. I'm thesmallest empire and struggling along, having had to bribe Shaka shamelessly to end a war I was losing, often in 6th place out of 7 in points. Still, I'm alive so I'll plod on.
T213: I'm at war with Bo and Shaka; lost samsun and giantep and gained Tolosa.
T219: I lose Edirne to the Zulu
T220 I regain Samsun and lose Tolosa
T226: G Khan and Tokugawa haved joined Boo and Shaka in waging war against me. This is no longer any fun. Bye

Not at all OFogy, to be honest I thought as I was going to have to slog it out on holiday climbing up and down mountains, you guys could have a tough two weeks too.......

But seriously, we thought it would be interesting to throw you guys a curve ball, and see how you did with a leader unsuited to the job at hand of achieving the tough task of battling it out against the bad boys over nasty terrain.

Don't worry, we won't do it too often!!!!
