Well done to all the winners!

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

I don't know about that - winning earlier should IMo give a better score.

It does give a better normalised score (as you can see in the scorelist for this game above).
Conclusion: it's a good thing you guys did do that!

Though personally I wouldn't have minded if you hadn't done that, since I would've won otherwise

            A really enjoyable game.

Great Lighthouse and the Colossus were must-haves in this game, of course. I got a little lucky by discovering Copper near my capital shortly after starting the Colossus. I would have expected that feature to have been rolled into the Event system.

Upon contact with all the other civs it was clear that I would be able to retain a tech lead until the end of the game, barring a suprise killer AI. That seemed unlikely though. I therefore decided not to expand beyond the starting island much, at least not militarily. Partly I did this because it would result in the most parsimonious victory, partly because I expected going to war would slow down the lauch date. It's difficult to predict this though; it could have gone either way if I had, for instance, concentrated on taking out Rome early.

The other civs were mostly Pleased with me, except Isabella whom I went to war with a few times. My advanced navy and air power sunk her transports, so there was never much danger.

I initially beelined for a Diplomatic victory, but miscalculated how popular I was compared to Catherine. So I spent the rest of the game shifting gears for a Spaceship victory, trying to avoid a Diplomatic loss.

I was once again really impressed with the power of the Dike. On a map like this one it really is unfair.

I agree that it's important to use a scoring system that takes into account the date of victory. Otherwise warfare/conquest would be the only viable way to win the competition.
