Theres nothing more defeating to the spirit, then to see the best laid plans go to waste. Following details some of the highlights from my pitiful attempt to conquer the world which sadly resulted in the space race. Maybe on alpha centauri I can be king.
So I plop down meh first settlement, busisness as usual; except this go around I want to get a decent foundation before settling the new world.
Second scout is trained, quickly he finds a local tribe good enough to teach us how to farm! My lucky day, I can feel the advantage coming on!
Pop hits 2 in the capitol, time to put out a worker and get my roads going.
Bronze working done, I have copper to the north; looks like eqypt has copper as well next to some stone; not good, could give em an early game wonder advantage.
Iron working done, good deal iron to the south and on the coast, gunna need a coastal town anyways later on.
Barbarian town near my iron... no problem; 2 chariots later its a distant memory. Good both iron deposits linked up; barracks done, swordsmen coming out to play.

BAM! Memphis is sacked in a turn, but it looks like the useless egyptians have upgraded 2 warriors to axemen, no problem, I'll stick to the trees and let them waste themselves against my swordsmen.
Horseriding done, good, I need the mobility; 4 towns up and running a good 5 tiles between each other... lots of room to get big, but this early means some slow going to get any kinda force together. A few tree chops later and I'm sending in the cavalry.
Arrrggg... loosing money, step back the tech, good thing I am going straight for currency; mathmatics will help me get out those cats, gunna need em; Egypt is bunkering down hard... roads cut, farms smashed... that should slow em down...
2 new cats roll off the assembly line a few turns later... the war has stalled to a grind, only an archer here and there to pick off trying to lift the siege on thebes, does em no good... and I have a few cav with retreat abilities nearing veteran levels. That will pay off later when I need to break resources.
I trade rice for ivory with persia, time to put out a couple elephants; by the time they get to thebes its sacked, damn egyptians have 2 religeons both based in thebes, I can't believe my luck...

Alexandria falls a few turns later, leaving the last settlement at the mercy of a third cat... my horse archers finish the job, and not a moment too soon; my research is bottoming out and my new colonies are bleeding me dry, a hanging garden later and a quick switch to buhdism peace is restored to the land...
Whos next?

Hmm, hanging gardens has almost hurt me more then it helped... population growing restless... only 3 workers to my name, and cities from coast to the middle of the pangea... I cut an open borders deal with persia and the greeks... rosevelt looks like he wants to play ball too, open borders and I send in the monks and scouts.
Several turns later... I check my diplomatic advisor... what the hell... everyone is singing kumbaya!? Green lines between everyone... not good, my army is strong but is starting to loose ground technologically, my foundation is hardly linked together, and my population is exploding. I look for an option... Russia looks like prime rib, but I'm cut off by mansu's cultural line, he's second place now, and is not cutting slack... cant get there, gunna need a floatilla...
I hold out a couple more turns.
Looks like the comps are trading each other everything under the sun, time to bunker down my forward cities, I skip cavalry, looks like the other civs are going to lock down with knights and pikemen, could be messy... no choice, I need to get to the industrial age and try to golden age some.
Golden age 1... cash fixed, tech back up, clicking off the knowledge at a pretty good rate, cyrus is doing a good job of buffering me, Russia has sued for trade relations... there goes that... muskettes, rifles, almost there...
Mansu looks like he wants to pick a fight... he still has good relations with everyone, he has founded confuctionism... all the other civs have bought into it... I'm buhdist due to it being spread through my cities first... I continue to try to convert... no matter, liberalism by mansu, he sells it off ; either they go freedom of, or hard line...
Mansu continues to drop wonder after wonder... not good; he eventually steals the Kremlin from me... I curse myself at this point, I got the taj mahal, 2 golden ages back to back... no choice, I have to break him before he goes full on industrial.
Thanks Alex, I needed the cash...

Here I come Manny... just gimme one lousy town on your coast...

Arrrggggg, Manny has industrial techs... modern infantry in his town, look bought up... I press the attack on his northern most town, surely with this many units even behind the tech we can take it down... frigates have been hammering away now... we press the attack...
one... two... three... eight... my units drop like flys to his modern infantry... one knight survives with 2 retreats... he pillages an iron, stone, pig farm... and a few villages... he dies soon after.... damn, I have a new army being raised but now the heat is on, I bribe the other civs to stay out of the war as best I can, Manny buys off the persians for some open borders... bastards...
I'm in it for the haul now, as quickly as I can I recall my ships... they arrive the same turn as my assembly line, with Alex's money I turn my wooden fleet into a destroyer fleet, and send em back to pay Manny a visit, my galleons are replaced with troops transports and I have infantry pouring out... carrier one done... carrier 2 done... there on there way... Manny sends a few tanks accross the border but my Stuka's slow them down, my antique cannons finish the job, everything available is redeployed to the transports... lets see how he handles this...

I send a few troops to the south to cut one of Manny's oil wells, they also cut the roads and new train line; his two north cities are isolated, he gets up some SAM troopers... my fighters do enough that the infantry can take the towns...
2 airports done at home and panzers fall out of the sky... Manny gets up choppers, and persist in pouring out the SAMS, appollo project is done... but has his flag on it, wont matter soon.
Manny's third city falls to a combined force of panzers and airpower, Greece has thrown in with me and invaded him from the south, they quickly sack one of his larger towns... Apparently they where getting oil from Manny and when his supply ran out, so did there patience... I sack his last remaining towns and recover my workers picked off by Manny's early tanks.
I switch over to culture output to get my new cities out of the danger zone of cultural revolution... the war has cost me, not in units but in time. Manny's air defence network being the primary culprit.
I finish the manhatten project, and proceed to drum out several nukes... no one seems interested in a conflict anymore; and most the civs have switched to my civics...
At this point it's obvious that Manny not only delayed me, but has traded off everything he had to all the other civs... any further military conflict will just drain me down... the other civs are closing in on the space race... I can nuke or just ride the game out...
I focus and locking down all the other wonders, and press to space race. The internet gives me a few techs I blew past... but hardly worth what went into it, the space elevator is done, and so is this campaign.
If theres anything worthy in this game its that I did it in one session... other then that, I made so many little mistakes in the mid game that not for having of sacked egypt and thebes being by far, the best placed city in the game... I could of easily lost. Modern infantry btw, is incredibly overpowered for what it is, between that and a few SAMS I was ground down to an almost trench war state. If anything hurt me in this game, its that I usually play on Epic mode... normal threw me off with how quick the computer can advance, and before I knew it, the turns and time had blown by. All in all, a good game; the only real derivative in this challange is how much the initial capture of egpyt takes a player, and how long they ride that inertia.
Thanks for reading, look forward to SPT2!
