  • Should AU207 use Play the World civs?

Ok, we've decided on "Huge map" for AU207.

I know some people still do not own a copy of Play the World. However, with so many civs, I believe the game would be more fun if it would be possible to play (and play against!) some the more interesting new civs. My inclination is not to leave anyone out, but maybe those who do not own PTW do not mind skipping this one.

Please vote on this issue (soon!).

Oh, and I've set up the map already...looks like a good one!

Yes, I'm set on playing the Spanish for this one.

No, I can play yet another game as the Egyptians.

My impression was that several of those who asked for this game didn't have PTW so leaving them out is not an option.
It would be nice to play against some of the new civs. I'm sure you can annoy us with Carthage. Should you rule out nearest equivalent civs?

As long as the closest three or four rivals are the same, I would see nothing wrong with having different opponents farther away for standard and PtW versions.

Actually, given my previous success with Egypt on a big map, they're on my short list of civs I might like to play this game. But I haven't made up my mind between them, France, Carthage, and the Ottomans yet (or I might think of others when I have more time). But definitely not Spain!

Mountain Sage did not have PTW yes?

Spain is a pain to play against. The AI is actually smart enough to send those freakin Conquistadors to capture undefended cities...

Does anyone support Nathan's idea of making the nearest civs stock Civ3, while the more distant ones can be from PTW? That sounds like a good compromise, and the AARs are bound to be interesting.

I'd prefer to have the nearest civs different. Of course an attempt should be made to use similar 1.29 civs.

I don't like the idea of having different civs as next-door neighbors because how things go in the early game is so critical to how they go later. There might not be a lot of difference between England and Korea as neighbors, but if any of our neighbors are relatively powerful civs, I think it would be hard to get something close enough to equivalence.

minke, we could make 2 versions of the game, one stock Civ3 (with only the original civs) and one Play the World (with the new civs added). Both versions would have the same (stock Civ3) civs near the start location, as this would make for more or less a similar game for everyone (or, at least comparable).

I think this is a good compromise.

I would, however, like to see Carthage start in the middle of several other civs, at least... it can make a big difference... if it's going to be in the game.

I'd also say that the nearby civs (at the least) need to be the same for all versions -- when the game situations diverge too much, the role of comparing games (and tactics and strategies) loses a lot of its potential to teach. I'd be fine with varied civs farther away.

Are we playing a huge "true archipelago" or a huge "something else?"

I've tried to make it so that the AARs should be quite similar at the beginning, and roughly similar toward the end (the far-off civs are mostly different in the PTW version, but their respective locations/strengths/aggressiveness trios are comparable).

The map is Huge, Continents, 70% water, everything else secret.

Knowing how evil Dom had been when setting up AU 204 , I think it is pretty safe to say that it is a "true archipelago"!
