  • If there's a panel set up to vet proposed changes to the AU Mod, I think alexman is an obvious key and Nathan a great choice. I shouldn't be on it (and won't be) -- truth be told I almost always play with standard "out of the box" rules -- the only time I play the Mod is in AU games, and then not in every AU game. Someone with a greater vested interest in the effectiveness of the Mod reaching its goals (and who regularly plays it) would be a much better fit.

I can understand not wanting to nominate yourself Dominae, but why shouldn't you be on the panel? You play the Mod regularly (if I'm not mistaken) and you actively participate in the AU Mod discussions regularly. I don't see why you yourself shouldn't be on any such panel if one is created.

    • Dominae, I think I'll go ahead and try playing with the regular AU Mod. I still have serious misgivings, but I don't think the changes Alex snuck in are as likely to undercut my Egyptian strategy as they would be strategies I use with other civs. Thanks again for being willing to set me up a modified version, though.

      • Actually, Catt, I was hoping you would be the unbiased "voice of reason" on the panel. Although you do not play with the mod, your occasional comments on some of its features are clear and pertinent.

I honestly consider myself to be a bad candidate, as I'm prone to get into arguments with alexman and Nathan (who should definitely be on the panel, IMO). I'm also too willing to say "whatever" when things do not go my way, instead of thinking things through and backing up my arguments. I think we need someone who is more likely to form a definite opinion.

        • Nathan, you did get the file I sent, right?

I hope this mod business does not get in the way of anyone's fun. If it does, the mod is not worth it in my opnion (I mean that). If ever it comes to abandoning the AU mod entirely, I think you'll find that the stock rules are still fun.

          • I can't find it in my inbox, so either it didn't get through or it got lost amidst the spam. In any case, I'm far enough along with the regular AU Mod version that it doesn't especially matter.

            • Thanks for considering me for this AU mod panel, but I have to decline. I'm afraid that I don't have the energy to get into these recent never-ending debates with the other two panel members. I would much rather spend my time actually playing the game, or trying to figure out how it works.

But I wonder if Nor Me could accept in my place. I think he has a very high understanding not only of the mod and how it goes about reaching its goals, but of the game in general.

              • Actually I was hoping that the three panel members would sit out of most of the debates, and would simply vote when a new version would be released. I'm not sure how you could not be on the panel, alexman, given your central role in the AU mod in the past.

Maybe we can do without a panel after all, but if the major disagreements continue, I think it is the best way to avoid slugfests!

                • I don't really care whether there's a formal panel or an informal process of building a consensus, just so long as there's an adequate period for discussion and to make sure proposed changes are okay with the players before they're incorporated.

Don't wait for me. I know you're dying to to start asap. I'll catch you up (CNN is not very interesting or useful anyway).

Idiot? Speak for yourself. I'm not idiot, just plain dumb (specially with computers)

I presume that DL means 'download' and not Direct Library (Dominae's new Wonder in AU207)

My vacation is in RL, not a self-imposed vacation from civ (hah, like that would work!). I won't have access to civ in the Caribbean, and if I did, and I played, I should probably be shot.

This makes perfect sense. It's what's been going on all along. Adding a layer of beuracracy will probably just polarize viewpoints unnecessarily, and inhibit newcomers ("nice mod, but if I'm not on the panel, why bother commenting.").

I could be wrong about both of those points, but why fix something that isn't broken? As long as a reasonable number of people have voiced opinions about changes, and you have some sound evidence (or theory) to support them, then decisions can be made.

                        • As the self-appointed Official Fool of Apolyton, I would like to nominate Alexman, Nathan, Dom AND Catt to sit on the panel, and perhaps a fifth person just to adjudicate arguments between them!

The panel's main purpose would be to vote: ties would be broken by the adjudicator. Debate would be civil.

What you guys seem to be arguing about certainly does NOT seem irreconciliable from an outsider's point of view.

I managed to uzip the file. It's AU207.bic
How do I load it in Civ3, since it seems to accept only .sav files?

                              • I extracted the version I'm playing directly into my PtW scenario folder and then loaded it as a scenario.

I don't remember if using vanilla CivIII makes the process different, though.
