I have, of course, used all of them, although I rarely use Communism and Monarchy. I prefer short wars and fight WW with luxury resources and spendings.
The AI uses Communism very often, usually in prolongued wars. Check your military advisor window to see their government type. Because it also likes to draft like mad, its cities often starve. This was especially bad in 1.17f. There cities starved down to size 1-3. In 1.21f this was tweaked, but still big AI metropolises starve down to size 7-10.Originally posted by miccofl
I have never used communism, nor am I likely to. (I read the stats in the editor.) The AI won't even use it; at least in any game I have played. "Better dead than red."

I've tried communism once. Like most other former communist states, I will never do it again. In non-religios games I go directly from despotism to republic and stay there, as I hate long anarchy periods. Democracy is not that much better than republic if you have captured enough slaves to do all terrain labour.
In religios games, I choose whatever government that is best for the current situation (which communism never is). Too bad political correctness after 9/11 left out the fundamantalist gov option planned for CIV3. That would had been a killer for quick and dirty wars.So get your Naomi Klein books and move it or I'll seriously bash your faces in! - Supercitizen to stupid students

I thought Fundamentalism was taken out because of the same reason a lot of Civ2 concepts/units/improvements/etc were taken out: to streamline the whole game. Civ2 added a lot of new things on top of Civ1. Civ3 removed a lot of those additions and instead used alternatives to streamline it all (eg. replacable parts doubling worker speed rather than settlers upgrading to engineers).

At least thats what I read here on Apolyton in the pre-release discussions. Some acts of terrorism was also taken away from the spy abilies, like plant nuke and poison water supply. However, it might be just speculation.Originally posted by Kizami

I've never used Democracy in any of my games. I tend to go to war often and for long periods of time and hate WW.
However, my play style is slowly changing and I should give demo a try! Shame on me for ignoring a govt. that everyone here raves about!
Communism, although I rarely use it, does have it's advantages if used correctly. But that's a topic for another thread.....signature not visible until patch comes out.

Democracy seems to cut corruption very little over Republic. I conquer alot enroute to Alpha Centuri, so I pick up plenty of "guest" workers, so the 50% speed bonus isn't worth it. At the cost of making Relgeous civs less valuable, I it might be a good idea to use your editors to make Anarchy more like despotism, so government changes make sence, then give free units to Democracy, unlimited free units to Communism, and less corruption or free units to Monarchy. Unfortunately, you may lose a little historical accuracyOriginally posted by statusperfect
I always go for republic. Low corruption. Low war weariness. Lots of trade. There is no need to go for Monarchy or Communinsm no matter how much war you do and Democracy is so damn lame.
make the governmnts more playable.

Negative on that. Neither a spy nor an embassy is needed.Originally posted by jshelr

Do you have to have a spy?
Just click on the right half on "The Army of {country} - {government}", choose another country and see its government type.
Btw folks, 1.29f is out.
