I like playing on various map settings. If playing for score, Pangaea/Warm/Wet/5 Billion maps are the best. I find Archipelago/3 Billion maps to be the most enjoyable though.
Continents/Normal. I think that Pangea is rather cheap - conquest is too easy when there's no need for naval power/transport. You just move in your units, rinse, repeat.
Earth maps don't do it for me either. Part of the "fun" such as it is, is the exploration. The "oh, hey, I'm in Europe" moment that occurs in about 3800 BC or so kind of ruins that.
I'd play the bigger maps with 16 civs, if the lag wasn't so ridiculous. Of course, I'm so impatient it's rather pathetic.

Damn, I always find myself in australia. By the time I contact another civ, two or three civs have bit the dust.
I drink to one other, and may that other be he, to drink to another, and may that other be me!
