city trading with AI

Has anyone tried trading cities with the ai during peace talks. During a game i traded one of my larger cities for several of the AI's. Before i made the deal i stationed several of my units outside the city i was going to trade. Soon as the deal was completed i took back over the undefeded city.....

just want to know if this works on one of the harder difficulty settings????

That's an obvious tactic, but you might suffer severe reputation loss. An maybe you don't care. But the AI will give ANYTHING for a good city or two, all their techs, anything. But I'm thinking that warring them right after a treaty or with a passage agreement or after giving them the city might hurt your rep. Maybe I'm wrong?
