Civ 1 and 2 strategies.

My startigies for Civ1 and 2 have always been to build only 4 or 5 cities and build them up into heavily protected massive cities. Normally I could keep ahead of the AI easlilly in both Science, but with Civ3, my stratigies seem to be shot.

Has anyone won, even at the easiest level, by only having a few cities?? It looks like the AI goes nuts and build hundreds of cities..
