Excess Science Question

In civ ii any excess science beakers after discovering a tech were put towards the next tech you chose to research.

Does anyone know if this is the case in civ iii or are they simply lost?

I notice that when I trade for a tech I have almost discovered, the next tech I choose happens quickly -- this suggests it rolls over.
