  • Do conquered civs reappear?

This always bothered me in previous Civs. I always turned the option off.

In my current game I eliminated the last French city just before 1AD, and on the next turn they reappeared elsewhere on the continent. I know this because I retired and looked at the replay. It's possible they moved a settler there as they had a right of passage with the English, and just happened to be able to found a new city on the turn after I eliminated their last city. But I find that improbable.

The civs stay in the game as long as they have a settler left to build a new city. I killed the zulus in my game but they still had a settler and eventually made another city. Once I killed that an advisor popped up and told me the zulus were completly destroyed and the zulu leader dissapeared from my diplomacy screen. Later in the game I took al the american cities and an advisor popped up right away telling me they were destroyed. Abe Lincon then dissapeared from my diplomacy screen.

Just FYI, the game considers a player dead when these two conditions are met:

      1) the player has no cities left standing, and
      2) the player has no settlers remaining.

Once these two conditions are met, you'll get the "Sire, the {civ} has been destroyed" message and they are gone for good. Until you get that message, it's likely there's a settler somewhere running for his life

Damn, I think I saw a German settler run for his life and I gotta get out of war ASAP.

        Thanks.
