    Aeson, could you expand a little on your extensive use of Scouts?
    The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

      On a decent sized map scouts can accomplish almost all of the purposes of your cities.

      They discover gifts of gold and free techs replacing your commerce. They discover free units and settlers replacing your shield and pop production.

      Goodie Huts are your friend. The only thing better than a Goodie Hut is plopping your first city down and realizing that every tile in its 21 tile radius is a river tile.

      (Note the closest I ever came was 19 tiles having river access, and I had to move my initial settler 2 tiles to do it.)
