Dealing with coruption?

I am only in my first game with Civ 3, but I have noticed that corruption is more difficult to cope with than in earlier versions.

What is the best attack to lower the corruption waste?
I know Couthouses and Palaces lower the corruption, but I would need a more detailed explanation.
