  • Pillaging

Has everyone noticed that one cannot select which terrain improvement to pillage during a turn... and also that every improvement within the square is pillaged atonce? I think this could be key for absolutely ravaging an enemy economy. Not only disconnecting trade routes via roads such that unit building is hindered, but add to that mine or irrigation loss at the same time... So far, i haven't needed to do any raids like that, because I have been able to beat the AI's in the field quite handly. But I imagine that mass pillaging raids isn't a thing the AI will try on the human...

I have had times where not all of the improvements are destroyed in pillaging.

It almost seems like tiles with railroads have two steps of pillaging- the rails go first, leaving the rest; then the next pillage takes everything else out.

    Can anyone confirm this?

Once you get cannons and other bombardment units you can sometimes destroy individual improvements without being in the tile itself. Has some uses in those borders that are starting to look like trenches with the enemy's improvements are near your front but you don't want to risk sending units out to destroy the improvements.

Along the related subject of pillaging: razing a city. Unfortunately I had the displeasure of being the serious underdog when the large Babylon empire decided to declare war on me. I held my borders well enough and I decided to send cavalry and such to attack a nearby major city. I took it but I didn't have the men to hold it. What's a general to do? Burn the place down and drag the populace away as captive workers before the enemy can retake it! Good to do when your on the short end of the military power scale and it denies the enemy of a closeby friendly city to rest, recover, and build units in.
No such thing as overkill, just ensured victory!
