So, a brief introduction. I started this story in 2001, shortly after Civ3 first came out, and the first two parts have sat on my hard disk for over two years. One of the things that fascinated me about Civ3 was the way in which, while the game imposed no narrative on the player, many generated their own narratives that were far richer and personal than any a stranger could write. While playing this particular game, I constructed this story in my own mind...
It's a bit of a departure from my last, long and still unfinished story that I wrote on the SMAC boards, called 'Unavoidable Casualties' (my nick was 'Elemental' back then), but I enjoyed writing it. When I got involved in the Intersite Demo Game, partly because it's very fun, and partly because I want to do some research on group play dynamics, I was reminded of my old 'Ad Astra' story.
It's in six parts, spanning three generations. I can't make any promises about when I'll get around to finishing it since it's been a long time since I last worked on it, but I'll release the first part now and the second part in a few days.
