Chapter IV - Sacrifices of War
MARCH, 1942 ----- [CLASSIFIED]
FROM: Rear-Admiral Kosaku Mitsukashi, Command Center, Saigon
TO: Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, Imperial Navy Headquarters, Tokyo
Admiral, let me begin this message with splendid news from the command center in Kwajalein. Rear-Admiral Inoguchi has reported the confirmed destruction of the American aircraft carrier, the CV Enterprise. This outstanding victory would not have been possible without the master skills of the crew of the Imperial submarine I-16 and the masterful guidance of their commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Yamada Kaoryu. The submarine used the cover of the dark night of the 23rd to secretly sneak into the convoy, cleverly avoiding the DD Worden and DD Dewey’s detection. The I-16 slowly navigated until it reached weapon firing range. Around 0235 hours, Lt. Cmdr. Yamada ordered the launch of three torpedoes at the American carrier. The fatal projectiles impacted the Enterprise shortly after, producing three shocking explosions. She leant approximately 35 degrees port-wise, causing most of the airplanes on deck to slid across and fall to the water, while the ship gradually disappeared beneath the black ocean. In the middle of the turmoil, the escorts desperately began seeking the mysterious attacker. The Dewey dropped several depth charges while scouting the surroundings of the task force. Unfortunately, one of them hit the I-16 in the stern, but the captain managed to control the damage and stay submerged for the time being. The next morning, however, around 1020 hours, a detonation occurred when the sub was 50 meters below the waves, probably induced by the charge that had hit the stern the night before. Yamada hastily gave the order to blow the ballast tanks to send the I-16 to the surface as soon as possible. Nevertheless, the fire produced by the explosion had severely damaged the diesel engines, disabling the vessel. Reparations started by 1050 hours and continued until 1207, when an American reconnaissance plane spotted the surfaced sub from the distance. It wasn’t long until the airbase at Wake Island sent a bomber wing after the critically damaged submarine. The enemy planes arrived by 1249 and were already harassing the small vessel by 1252. A few brave sailors manned the deck gun to shoot at the attacking bombers, and managed to down one enemy aircraft. However, the sub was hit multiple times in the process and sank it by 1305 hours. Lt. Cmdr. Yamada managed to send a distress call to Kwajalein, which sent a hydroplane to rescue the survivors. There was only one survivor, however, Petty Officer 2nd Class Josuke Kumagae, who was taken back to our base nearby and debriefed Rear-Admiral Inoguchi about the valiant ordeal of the I-16.
We have noticed an increase in the Dutch naval activity in the vicinity of Saigon. Fortunately, we have managed to reduce said activity to a minimal this month. The submarine K-XII was spotted about 300 miles off the coast of Saigon, and was pursued and sunk by our heavy cruiser Kumano (West Pacific). More Dutch vessels were seen marauding these waters, the CA De Ruyter was spotted barely 25 miles from the airfields near Saigon. Given the threat it meant to a significant part of our air operations in the area, most of the flight groups were scrambled to dispatch the invading cruiser, and so they did. The CA Chokai was sent to eliminate the other Dutch warship in the sector, the DD Tenedos. Our cruiser performed successfully, suffering minimal damage. Yet another Dutch vessel was detected, surprisingly far to the east from Saigon, approximately 230 miles south-east of Palau, the base of our newly formed 4th Task Force. Regarding that, I have ordered the commanding officer in Palau to set the group to intercept the remains of the American task force which escorted the CV Enterprise before our submarine attack.
Regarding the Chinese battalions near Peking, I have received information from our embassy there that suggest those forces do not intend to attack their former capital. Instead, I assume they will mobilize to the vicinity of the neighbouring cities, such as Kaifeng, Nanking to the south-west and Mukden to the east. This should not be a problem since the 6th Army has been relocated to Peking and the enemy regiments are being constantly bombarded by our artillery batteries in the area.

Looking forward to your return...
