  • An idea... Simultaneous turnchat..

Me and my friend is about to start PBEM game soon and what my friend suggested to jump start the beginning was interesting. As you all know the beginning of PBEM has to be accelerated either giving more settlers on beginning, turnchat or whatever to get the game speed going. He asked me if a simultaneous game can be converted into a PBEM later. I told him that this isn't possible, but later tried the test. If you run a simultaenous game, save it then load the game in the multiplayer, you can change the setting of the game to PBEM. The only problem is that there is no password for any human players. This is not a problem between me and my friend since we trust each other very much, but in other circumstances this may not be a good idea. If only password can be changed during the middle of the game, (admin can change the password but in this case you don't even have an admin password), or somehow start a PBEM game, set a password then convert to Simultaenous for accelerated beginning then revert to PBEM?

If some kind of workable conversion can be done, it may not be a bad idea to use it in the PTW demo game either.

    the Idea ist good, but.....

We want some civ3 multiplayer Demogame, don't we?
We all know that the first few turns in the game may be fast to play but are also crucial to the game until the end. What you screw up early can harm your game till the end. Since we are demogratic these important first moves must be discussed thouroughly in the teams. If we start in a simultanious way, this would not be the case. So i would object to your proposal and say that we start the game tomorow with the first round beeing played slowly by sending the pbem file from day to day from team to team and have some fast chatbased turnsessions later on, when the first moves are made.

If the simultaenous mode is without timelimit, not only would you have plenty of time to discuss move with your teammates, this would cut email sending time and waiting time (since even if one player takes forever to do one turn, it would be still better as simul since you could have done one turn worth while waiting).

I dunno if simultaenous can be worked out to full conversion to PBEM due to what I stated above. Lack of password could be annoying. If someone can figure out how to work this properly by tomorrow, it may not be a bad idea. Once again, we don't have to pressure teams to hurry. We can play the game as if it was turn based, but if we start as a simul, we can effectively cut email sending time and waiting player turn time a little bit.

OK, let me see if I understand:

simultaneous play is when all players do one turn at the same time. Is there a button to press when you are done your turn, and you wait until all buttons are pressed and then you go onto the next turn?

It would be really fantastic if this could be done, without messing up the game in any way or without enabling a potential bug.

Technically then, you could do this at any time, not just the beginning of the game, correct?

It seems as from PBEM to Simul is not possible.

So no weekend extreme turnchat with your friends. Also, I haven't still found a way to resolve the password issue.
