if "The Patch", the one that you know, is supposed to make the game WORK, isn't out by the time we want to start (12/1 supposedly), should we wait for it?

I don't think it addresses any SP issues(and thus PBEM) AFAIK, so I don't see a need for it.
Besides, we don't really know when they will release it, If they announce, it will be realeased 2/12 or even 5/12, I don't mind waiting though.

            Start now.

We can always patch it later.

AFAIK if we start the game on 1.04, we end it on 1.04

That's how I understood it. Go see Trip about it, if you don't like it

No. As it has been said, we have no idea how long it may actually be until we have the patch in our hands. And, as it doesn't effect PBEM (so far as we know), it's not vital.

Well, anything other than hotseat and PBEM is completely hosed under 1.04, but I'd be ok with STARTING with v1.04 and then upgraded as soon as the patch comes out (assuming it doesn't come out before we start, making this entire discussion moot).

In the SP DemoGame, we didn't upgrade because saved games were reacting strangely when patched (so spoke the Firaxians).
I say we don't wait, but we upgrade if the patch doesn't affect any significantly the pre-patch saves.

The problem with NOT patching is, and trust me here, the game is HOSED when it comes to playing over the Internet and it's extremely laggy EVEN ON A LAN (I've played several games on a LAN with my friend... the lags frickin' annoying!). That said, we'll mostly be doing PBEM rather than turnchats or anything like that, so maybe it won't be a problem...

you won't have a choice to whether to download the patch or not when it comes out.
1.04 included an auto-patching feature when connecting to GameSpy. Anyone who tries to play any MP through GameSpy after the patch's release will have to download it.

asking people not to play other MP matches (especially if it actually works ) just because we wish to maintain the integrity of the saves is a bit too demanding.

I understand why you might want to wait, but I fear it isn't practical for this game.

There is no problem if you install civ&ptw twice, and keep one at 1.04

If you're playing the SP Demogame as well, you'll end up having 3 installs of Civ+PtW

Play with the 1.04f patch and when ever there is a new one, upgrade. We are all here frequently enough to be able to keep up with the patches.
