Well, at least BEFORE the private forums started, the Glory of War team was talking about being the Celts in plain sight
If you've changed your minds, then I don't know about it...
I'm saying the Celts are taken, but your correction is more accurate... However, I have absolutely no interest in being the Celts - so they might as well be taken as far as I'm concerned

With the Numidian Mercenary (30 shields), Carthage has at the same time an archer and a hoplite (40 shields). It's interesting........

It'd be interesting to test the attack/defense force of, say, an army composed by 5 archers and 5 hoplites versus 5 numidian mercenaries.
Actually, the fairer test would be 3 Archers and 3 Hoplites (120 shields) versus 4 Numidian Mercenaries (120 shields)
Your answer Assuming all are veteran and on grassland:
Team with archers goes first:
Archer 1 dies, wounds Numidian 1 to 2 health
Archer 2 dies, Numidian 2 wounded to 3 health
Archer 3 dies, Numidian 3 wounded to 1 health
Hoplites fortify
Numidians fortify until all 4 are healthy
Numidian 1 dies, wounds Hoplite 1 to 2 health
Numidian 2 dies, wounds Hoplite 2 to 3 health
Numidian 3 dies, wounds Hoplite 3 to 1 health
Numidian 4 wins, is wounded to 1 health, and kills Hoplite 2
Now 2 hoplites (2/4 & 1/4) vs. 1 Numidian (1/4).
Hoplite 1 has at least a 40% chance of killian Numidian 4
If Hoplite 1 dies in the attempt, then Hoplite 3 will only have about a 20-30% chance of defeating the last remaining Hoplite. However, odds are that in the end you would have one Hoplite with 1/4 health remaining and victorious...
This of course is a highly risky attack for either party. I did this simmulation with the archers attacking first...in the other way, all of the Numidians would die attacking the Hoplites, leaving one badly injured Hoplite and 2 archers.

It's possible to just calculate the probability of all possible outcomes... by conducting only a single simulation, you run the risk of getting unrepresentative results.

My post here is based off of experience...no better teacher...anyway, I bet my acceptance of the DG planet's name as Bob, that this is the norm. Surely, you would end up with a normal distribution with different results to the left and the right, however, I believe that what I have described would happen most of the time, iow would be the average result.

BTW, the true test should be how 4 Numidian Merecenaries work in, say, an attack against 2 spearmen and 2 archers (and theirs counter-attacks), versus the same attack made by 3 archers & 3 hoplites
I just had a curious random experience where a regular horseman took out a fortified full health veteran Numidian Merc ON A HILL!!!
I was quite disgusted to say the least...I would hope that this experience is exceptionally rare! In the same turn I had on Numidian Merc rise to Elite fending off 3 archers and 3 Warriors!...the AI attacked across a river...but still it was what I would hope to have happen!
