I played Civ2 since it was released. Honestly, now that I have Civ3, I can't go back to Civ2. I just miss too many of the features they added. Civ2 just seems a little more hollow to me now.

If you can get Civ2 for free or very cheap, then there's no reason not to check it out, though. Maybe you will enjoy it a lot, who knows?

I should get civ1 for that matter. I have never played it.

      Where could I find civ1?

If you can get Civ 1 & 2, do it! It would be like playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein without ever touching Wolf3D! Unacceptable! You've got to check out the game that started it all.

Instead of Civ II you should go all the way back to the original Civ (DOS based). Now that was a game!! I played that one exclusively for two years. Totally addicted! Of course, back then good games were few and far between. The only other games that could compete were Dark Forces and Doom II. Warcraft was still 3 years away and Quake was only a John carmack dream.

You have to create a login to download it, though. They also have the Windows version, so anyone interested might want to get that instead.

How does the Windows version work? Is it a DOS space within a Window, kind of like a framed WOW session? Or, was the app re-written for Windows? I can't imagine that happening.

I guess I better download it and find out. Thanks for the link.

AFAIK, the windows version was actually rewritten for windows. The interface and graphics look different than in the original DOS version.

Huh, I guess my imagination isn't as good as I thought it was.

Thanks Boris. Still haven't DL'd, but I'll let you know when I do.

No prob. For the record, I don't like sites like this and wouldn't download a game that is commercially available, as I like to support game designers with my dollars. However, Civ I is, AFAIK, not in print anymore, so buying it retail is virtually impossible. Also, I have seen it give out as a free game with several demo discs in game magazines, which says to me that it is open for distributing freely.

HOTU also gives it for free, doesn't it?

                            No. CivI is copy protected.

You mean the questions about research-advancing? They're easy, if you've played the game.

There's some bugs, also, at least I do get some error-messages.
