  • I can't install the PTW patch

I've downloaded the patch several times from several sites(Apolyton, Civ3.com, and Firaxis.com). I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game completely(both PTW and the original), and I still get the same error.

"The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. Th executable you are attempting to run has been corrupted. Please obtain another copy of the file, verify its integrity, and try again."

Now I was able to get a look at it right before this came up, and installshield was reading the contents of the package, like it normally does when installing something, but when it finished it closed out and this message pops up. It isn't a problem with installshield though. I can still install patches for the regular civ3 game, like 1.29f.

Prior to using this patch I had both games fully installed, Civ3 was on version 1.29F and PTW was on 1.01. I tried it with 1.29 off as well. I tried deleting all of my civ3 files and doing it again, but none of those worked.

Both Civ3 and PTW work fine. It's just the patch I'm having a hard time installing.

Anybody else have an error like this and know how to fix it?

    probably a lame suggestion, but

maybe you have a bad WinZip? Are you able to unzip other downloaded zip files?

It doesn't come as a Zipped file, it comes as an .exe, and no I am not having trouble unzipping other files.

this helped for someone else in the help forum, maybe it will do you some good too.

        Mike,

First of all, make sure that your system folder options are setup to
        "Show
All Files", since the folder you're going to be looking for is hidden.
After that, browse to the following directory:

        C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information

In this directory there may be several folders, depending on how many
programs are currently installed on the system that use Installshield
        as the
installer. The folder names will be in brackets and will consist of a
        long
        list of characters. For example:

        {978A2104-8363-11D4-AA23-0000E889C4DA}

Go into each folder, and open SETUP.INI. You'll find a line that looks
        like
        this:

        AppName=X

Look for the one where X is Civilization. After that, delete the
        folder
that contains that file, and then run the setup one more time.
        Hope that helps

You don't mention what version of Windoze you are using. Besides the above suggestion about hidden files you can try this to clean up your system:

          1. MsExplorer
File Search, C: drive and subdirectories
          File name *ini
          File contents: civ
There may be an ini file somewhere with an old reference.

          2. run regedit
          Search for civ
BE CAREFUL- only delete values that contain civ. You can be paranoid and change "civ" to "vic" in data file and not remove any registry entries. Note well-- unlike editing files, the changes you make here take effect immediately. There is no UNDO.
