    question about espionage
    specifically about planting spies

when i plant spies and they are caught, war is usually declared.
however, I have never had the choice to declare war when a spy has been captured in my civ ( i think 4 times this game).

Do I take a rep hit when I declare war the turn a spy is caught?

Does the Ai take a similar hit? I would think not, since its instantaneous?

    Thoughts?

Huumm, that's interesting, I wonder if the AI lose some reputation point when he declare war to us when we try to put a spy. Cause we take some reputation damage if we declare war... even if the AI spy was caught!
    Nice evening

Don't know about the rep hit of declaring when a spy is caught.

If your military is big enough they will not declare when they catch yours (discretion OCCASIONALLY being better than valor), even when they are only "impressed" by my culture. Tried to FOUR times (4-5 turns apart, in a PTW game) and no success and no war declaration.

In civ II i often got :X was caught with espionage, it gives us valid reason to go war..." YES or NO. I figure its the same way with Civ III, but i havent gotten that message yet, so i figure they either dont do any spying or are always sucessful so far.
        :-p

          Damn good question.

Because if your reputation is not hit, planting or exposing an enemy spy could be a good excuse for declaring war without losing reputation

It could also have a beneficial influence on war weariness.

So a very good question, now waiting for an answer.
