FP: a few months ago there was a thread by happysunshine in the civ3-forums and he was blaming nearly everyone of cheating and nearly everyone blamed him. now he might be a frustrated boy who thinks he's god, because he happens to win a lot, but it doesn't show much trust in the poly' community if the best can't trust each other... ???

Can someone tell me the point of cheating at civ? Do these people have such low self-esteem that losing a computer game means something to them? How pathetic!
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

Most cheating is done in real-time games, where the hackers can feel the ultimate thrill of decimating their opponents in front of everyone else. In games like Counter-Strike or Age of Empires, the hacker basically just wants to show off for a bit, then leave when things slow down (i.e. everyone stops playing, or stops complaining). I speak from experience (not as a hacker!).

Sure, I'm psycho-analyzing the hacker mentality with no proof whatsoever, but with Civ3 I don't get the feeling that Civ3 is the kind of game where hackers will feel at home. Maybe in Turnless or Simultaneous modes, but those are crap right now anyway. There might be those who use cheats to give themselves an added boost (hmm, I could really use 5 extra Cavalry in the next assault), but those people are so twisted that I can't imagine the world contains too many of them.

          Fair point.

I didn't mean that everyone here is an honest player, just that it is pretty easy to make up your mind about who are the 'good guys' just from being here for a while.

I won't have a huge amount of time to play MP, but when I do play there will be enough people here that I know and would completely trust to play fairly. Not everybody, but certainly enough.

Btw, just because somebody here is one of the 'best' players, or one of the most well-known posters doesn't mean I assume they are an honest MP-player.
If I'm posting here then Counterglow must be down.
