  • Could someone point me to a thread that helps one stay out of war

It seems no matter what I do every game, the AI teams up against me. They trade research and get way ahead of me, and then declare war on me until I'm a pathetic little civ.

I;d like to play one friggen game where the AI isn't constantly declaring war on me. And yes, even playing with Ghandi - he somehow becomes a huge warmonger.

    I'd appreciate any advice.

What level of difficulty are you playing?

Are you buying tech from your neighbours?

If you find yourself falling behind in tech, set research to 0. Rack up cash. Watch for a tech to get around most of the AIs. Buy it (it will be cheapest at this point).

Until you have Libraries and maybe Universities set up in your core cities, buying tech costs less commerce than researching it. The number of Libs and Unis you need to turn the situation around to research being good depends on the difficulty level.

I'm playing on Regent level. In the earliest part of the game I traded a few techs. Then all of the sudden every civ has 4 techs I don't, and I could never catch up. I never thought about setting research to 0 and buying the tech...

This has been so frustrating for me in my games where I use a default civ...

      Thanks!

If you want peace, prepare for war (Vegetius 4. century)

So even if you're not a warmonger, you should have a strong military to deter others from attacking - imho it's the main mistake peacefull players make because they think that if they don't want war, they needn't "waste" ressources on a strong military...

take a city (or two or three... depending on how big your empire is) that is not a big commerce producer (ie. not near a river, etc.) and make it a shield producer, then use those cities as military machines. The rest can be dedicated to building infrastructure for your empire.

Cagliostro hit the nail on the head (as did Vegetius 16 centuries ago). It's true in real life and in Civ.
