Not really a helping "Wal-mart" guy making house calls...but instead...a gamer helping out a fellow gamer.
I asked about to patch because I was wondering if it was their computer instead of the unpatched game...like I said...mine is patched and no crashes as of yet(dang...double jinxed
    ).

Since Infogrames is aiming for sales numbers well over 100,000 copies, 382 copies is way in the noise. Add a couple of zeroes to that and we're talking real money.

The shame of it all is that within a month I'm sure that Firaxis will have a patch that has solid internet play.

Hrm, I haven't bought it yet cuz I still wanna finish my current save. I'm also trying to stay away from posts that look really opinionated, because I don't want my opinion tainted before I even get PTW. But can you play a huge map with all that Civs now?? If so, that makes it well worth the purchase already! (I almost exclusively will play SP).

I'm currently playing a 24 civ huge map game (you have to make a scenario to do it) with all the new teams in addition to the old ones.

I think civ3-ptw is worth it, definately.

What has been puzzling me for the last few days, is how you would design and structure multiplayer....

Im just guessing here (obviously, as ive never seen the game code), but i think these are really what firaxis should be aiming to do:
            1. Thread the graphical user interface properly. The graphics on the screen should not have to wait for network traffic.

            2. Optimise the amount of network traffic being passed around. I think the main problem is not latency, but actually bulk amounts of traffic being passed around. I played a 5 player game yesterday on a 10/100 lan with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

I'm currently playing a scenario coming with PTW: 256² worldmap, 32 civs - but afaik, it's user made, so there would be no real need to buy the expansion for that - I still think it's worth it, because of it's combination with all the other improvements in one package...

Sorry, but you need PTW to get the 31 Civs at once. In addition, he used the new unit animation from PTW. TET had an advance copy of PTW and made his scenario use features from it (like search pathing).

Besides that, it's only saved as a bix and I don't think there is a bix->bic conversion out there.

I see - didn't know that, because I didn't play the original TET scenario, and since everyone was saying all the user-made mods were available before as free downloads, I thought it wasn't really new - well - seems my 50€ were even better spent than I thought

after reading everything that has been said about it, I decided to wait with purchasing PTW until the price drops, or until a new patch fixes it's problems (and adds new scenario building features).

I'm guessing that people who bought PtW and don't have internet access will lose out on all the following things.... ( & naturally any future patches until they appear on a magazine CD natch which you'd have to pay for ).

                      * Added autopatching ability via GameSpy
                      * Added the Pillage ability to Armies
                      * Added confirmation message for building outposts on top of colonies.
                      * Added ability to airlift to and from airfields.
                      * Added ability to airdrop from airfields.
                      * Added confirmation message for building airfields on top of colonies.

                      Changes in v1.04f:
                      * Removed Explore action from Cruise Missiles.

                      Fixes in v1.04f:
                      * Fixed several Multiplayer stability issues.
                      * Fixed bug with being unable to contact players who have used the espionage screen
                      * Fixed bug that caused players to win when they, in fact, lost.
                      * Fixed bug with draft button not updating in MP.
                      * Fixed memory leak with advisor screens.
                      * Fixed crash with advisor screens.
                      * Fixed bug with multiple advisor screens being open.
                      * Fixed bug with era not advancing.
                      * Fixed crash on replay screen.
                      * Fixed bug with goody huts not redrawing properly in some cases
                      * Fixed bug that caused starting locations in scenarios to be incorrect
                      * Fixed bug that caused civilopedia entries to be incorrect on the espionage screen
                      * Fixed bug that caused cities with air units to be unable to be captured in Multiplayer.
                      * Fixed bug that caused air units to not be destroyed if they are not in a city.
                      * Fixed bug that caused Play-By-Email mode to not function.
                      * Fixed bug that caused barbarians to receive victory points.
                      * Fixed typo in password popup.
                      * Fixed redraw bug that occurred after capturing/destroying airfields, towers, outposts, and colonies.
                      * Editor: Fixed bug causing invalid prerequisites after changing a tech's era
                      * Editor: Fixed bug causing commas to be added to some fields on the tech property page
                      * Editor: Fixed bug causing non-numeric characters to be allowed to be entered on the terrain property page
                      * Editor: Fixed bug that caused tech rate to have a comma in it
bit harsh on the poor peeps who don't have internet access though having said that internet access isn't exactly that expensive/hard to get these days.

Ah the joys of devils advocacy.
