Imi beating an army of immortals, now that may be the best one I have heard so far. Enough to make a grown man cry.

Immortals are a silly cheezy UU. Impi are cool as hell. They deserved to win.

Still can't upgrade armies? That's very lame. It makes them nearly useless, and certainly not something you would want to waste a leader on when the much better option is to build a wonder.

Actually, my first Great Leader I recieve, I build an army - to win at least one battle - This opens the way for me to build the Military Academy Small Wonder. With all of the other Great Leaders I might receive, I squirrel them away for Wonder construction.

I removed the flag requiring a victorious army to build the Military Academy. Figured that if you haven't gotten an army by the time you research Military Tradition, you should be able to build that so you can make armies the hard way.

Neat idea Sinapus...I never thought of that. Of course, this mean having to use the Editor in order to turn the requirement off. To bad this couldn't be done in the regular game set up.

Wait a minute...I seem to recall reading/hearing about how units in an Army will be able to be upgraded or switched (taken out of or added to an Army) in the PTW release...Did I recall this correctly or was it just a dream?

It is not mentioned in the patch readme and I do not see it in the manual.

True vmxa1, I just remember this during the PTW hype while it was still under production...

I think many would disagree with your assessment that armies are useless. A search of the strategy or even general forum would pull up many a thread where a case for the the real utility of armies is made pretty convincingly.

I think that was a dream -- I don't recall ever hearing that, but I do recall reading in a chat or a Firaxian post about how, prior to the release of basic Civ III last year, they playtested with upgradeable armies. Found them too overpowering and hence unbalancing. So it was a design decision to make armies unloadable and units in armies not upgradeable. There was abrief bug (1.16 or 1.17) with the "j" stack movement command that allowed the unloading of an army, but that was quickly corrected (again evidence of their design decision that unloading / upgrading was unbalancing).

Maybe that's where I first heard about upgrading armies. Thanks for the reminder Catt.
