  • When does attack and defence stats come into play?

Yes super newbie question im sure =)

Just fill me in! If I have a unit with 16.18.1 when does each number get used?

Will defence of 18 only be used why im fortified? or does it come into play if someone walks into my square? Like will attack of 16 only come into play if I am the one to move onto the enemys sqaure?

I hope im making sense! Basic I want to know when defence and attack is used in combat so I use the right units. Like if I go attack a base and have cannons should i use DEFENCE units to guard my cannons while my OFFENCE units attack the town? ot only use offence units since defence doesnt come into play!

    Arrgh!

i dont know why this thread is in the ptw section, but i think u are asking if the attack number come into play if you are defending and vice versa? im not exactly sure, i would think that attack numbers of a unit is used to deal damage back to the attacker if u are defending with a unit? for example, a swordman garrisoned in a city is being attacked by a horseman. does the swordman's attack of 3 factor in when defending by dealing damage to the horseman? im not too sure, i dont really understand the civ3 combat system, but im sure the answer is somewhere in the forum if we search.

The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

ok so using that combat calculator i guess the attack number doesnt mean anything when a unit defends. i calculated horseman vs spearman and horseman vs swordsman with horseman attacking and the odds were the same.
