  • CGW has new preview of PTW

Yesterday, I got the latest the issue of Computer Gaming World in my mailbox. And there is a 2 page preview of Play the World.

There was one tidbit that caught my attention. The preview mentions 3 new improvements, "Stock exchange", "Commercial docks", and "civil defense functions".

Stock exchange and commercial docks are obviously city improvements.

But what is the "civil defense function"? Is it a late game city improvement that gives a city a defense bonus? Or is it a new feature similar to the draft?
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

this all sounds like things we already knew, but I'll probably buy it anyway.

oh yeah sorry, it's a city improvement, it give a 50% bonus to bombardment defense or something like that I'm not sure but I think it mentions it specifically in the UGO preview.

          Here's the actualy quote

"New city improvements include Civil Defense (a 50% bonus to unit and bombardment defense), the Commercial Dock (adds trade for each water tile in city's radius) and the Stock Exchange (which becomes the prerequisite for the Wall Street Small Wonder and adds a 50% tax output from the city in which it is built). Workers can now build airfields, outposts and radar towers in the field as well."

Bombardment has alreay 50% miss chance against city units.

Like Displacement spell (those who play D&D will know what I think).

But of course that's true regarding current vanilla Civ III.
Probably Firaxis changed some artillery stats in PTW, or maybe they are balancing defense against Radar Artillery (a quite effective but late bombardment unit, IMHO).
"We are reducing all the complexity of billions of people over 6000 years into a Civ box. Let me say: That's not only a PkZip effort....it's a real 'picture to Jpeg heavy loss in translation' kind of thing."

It would be great if they realy tweaked it.

Form my expirience, bombarding of cities doesn't pay off until you get atrillery with it's ROF of 2.

Civil Defense comes with Radio, so BOmbers and Arty will be the big threat. It also adds another 50% to all defending units for regular attack.
