  • Still cannot upgrade units. Frustrated

    I now have the following: Sun Tzu's Art of War, which puts barracks in all my cities. I have 2 saltpeter mines linked to all my cities via roads. I can build muskettmen in any of my cities and have, but when I activate a single Pikeman in a city and tap 'U', nothing happens, no message, nothing. When I try shift-U, I get the message "Sorry we have not a singe Pikemen which can be upgraded." It is very frustrating not being able to upgrade any units as I get this message with every unit. Is this a bug? Can anyone send me a screen print of it actually working or a save game file I can load that works so I can try it on my system. Thanks

    Do you have enough money? BTW, Sun Tzu's only puts barracks in the cities on the same island. Are your pikemen on the same island? Do you get the lightning bolt icon when you select a pikeman?

      Exactly. I realized this when I found myself exactly in the same situation: no baracks, thus no upgrade on additional continents/islands, except the one with Sun Tzu. Check your city; I'm quite sure it has no barracks.

        upgrading

        Hi, I am using a Pangea single continent setup. No I don't get a lightnig bolt. How do you know what the gold cost is to upgrade? The cost for a musketman is 60 shields, but you can't store shields for future use in upgrading can you? The civpedia doesn't mention upgrade costs.

          The cost for upgrade is money, not shields.

            Btw, Leonardo's Workshop halves the costs of upgrades.

              Does anyone know how upgrade costs are calculated?

                I'd like to know that, too.
                I can only guess that the formula could be something like:

                (new_unit_cost - old_unit_cost) x n

                or maybe

                new_unit_cost - (old_unit_cost / n)

                Most probably n is 2.
                Anyway, just a guess. I don't have the game on this PC so I can't check it.

                    Not positive, but it seems like difference in shield costs in gold (halved if you have Leonardo's)

                      pikes to musketeers is somewhere from 20-60. i have no idea but thats a generic range for most units.

                      example

                      chariot->hosreman(10) (IIRC)
                      horseman->kinght (20)
                      knight->calvary (20)

                        The upgrade cost is twice the difference in shields needed to build the two units. For example, a warrior costs 10 shields and a Swordsman costs 30 shields. So you need 2*20 = 40 gold to make each upgrade.

                        The upgrade cost is halved if you have Leo's workshop.

                        BTW, this thread doesn't belong in this forum...

                          I recently had an odd occurance in a game. My main city had a barracks, and I had had iron working for some time. I had already upgraded almost all my warrriors (using shift-u). I took Rome, and it wasn't connected to iron, so I thought it would be good to have it pump out warriors to be upgraded. However, when the first warrior got to my home base, I couldn't upgrade him, even though I had the money. It was really strange. Has anything like this ever happened to anyone else?

                            Are the units that are to be upgraded actually in cities that meet the requirements?

                            Any units not in cities (or not in cities that meet the requirements) aren't upgradeable. I tend to move the older border guard units into cities when I can replace them with the newer units.
