And Conquistadors remain a ridiculous non-historic choice for a UU. They NEVER were a Spanish "military unit", just a small bunch of thugs who went to the New World.

True, but everyone's heard of Conquistadors. Firaxis tends to lean towards marketablity over historical accuracy.

Someone suggested a Spanish Pikeman unit. It actually has a name and was a mainstay of the Spanish Empire, I just can't rember what they called it.

I for one am glad it is the Conquistador and not some stupid Tercio!

Anything that replaces a pikeman or a musketeer would be useless. At least for my offensive campaigns as Spain. Though....this might work:

Make the pikeman 2.3.1, and make the Tercio 4.3.1. I could deal with that.

Conquistadors NEVER EXISTED as a military unit, and were very small in number anyway. They got a lot smaller fast because after they finished massacring the native peoples in the New World they started killing each other. The Tercio, on the other hand, was a combination of pikemen and musketeers that dominated European battlefields for a long time.

But reality plays no part for Firaxis.

Of course it would not effect my buying (or not) PTW; it can be edited. Issues such as Culture Flipping, or MP, are the crucial ones that I'm concerned with.

The Conquistador issue is merely another indication of Firaxis' disdain for History. They are presenting PSEUDO-HISTORY, and that is worse than a Fantasy game.

You're right, as long as they DON"T get rid of Culture Flipping, and DO put in MP I'm in. Assuming MP isn't so buggy that its useless....

I like that term PSEUDO-HISTORY, that does tend to discribe Civ3. But, Civ has always been about the users fantasizing about being history and not actual history itself.

Which is why they went the Conquistidor vs the Tercio (thanks, Dimorier Maximus, for refreshing my memory on the actual term). Regardless, you can always change the units in the editor and I think the Spanish Conquisidor will be useful for many mods and scenarios.

Maybe they'll be some sort of cheat mode where you can put a Musketman and a Pikeman unit in the same tile and merge them into a Tercio. Though I would like some distinction between the early wheel-lock and the later flint-lock muskets... they were used in very different ways, especially when the flintlock muskets were equipped with bayonets.
