anybody think you should be able to claim land, so its not in your boarders but the AI knows its gunna tick you off by building citys there! I like having an island, and i'm not fast at all when it comes to covering it in citys, so i've just had 3000years of wars between the civs who have built on my island! (And i don't mean from 4000bc - 1000bc, i'm talking about loads of turns!).

another thing multiplayer will be good for.
me: "Will, thats my damn island. stay the hell off it or i'll force you off"
will: "You can't claim this island, it's closer to me..."
me: "IT IS NOT! YOUR JUST SAYING THAT BECAUSE OF THE SALTPETER ON IT"
will: "SALTPETER? I dont even have gunpowder yet! thanks for the info!"
me: "f%$k."
we and my friends are drawing up our own "diplomatic agreements", that arent in game, but will be followed, such as land claiming, international/controlled waters, etc.
it'll be lots of fun, whenever it comes out."I've lived too long with pain. I won't know who I am without it. We have to leave this place, I am almost happy here."

Perhaps Explorers or Scouts could claim land much like a Worker buildes stuff, therefor making the expansionist trait even more useful...Know your enemies!

Darkworld, that could really make explorers useful. I haven't used a single one yet, by the time they come around the whole world is discovered, if not completely colonised. Perhaps that's just due to me prefering to play on smaller maps.
While it might be hard to implement with the AI (I have a hard time getting them to respect my real borders as they are. In a war I have to make sure I mop up any enemy units in my terrirtory - especially islands - before a peace treaty because they sure don't pull out themselves, and as soon as a I ask we're back to figting again) I look forward to being able to have informal agreements between players, such as respecting the fact that someone owns a particular island, or that a certain city should go back to their original owner ig you've taken it from a third party. You sunk my Scrableship!

I mentioned something a while back on anouther thread that might be a solution to this. I suggested fences, that would require a bunch of movement points to cross, so that the AI can't keep crossing over and over. This might be a good way to claim land, get a worker out to the borders and start fencing in your territory. Kind of like AOE, make gates to get through also. Maybe make it available with construction. They don't call me Springfield Fats because I'm morbidly obese!

The idea of fences and such reminds of me C&C...
The great thing about multiplayer in PtW(as UberKruX mentioned) are the verbal agreements and the custom diplomatic treaties.
"Stay off that island. I claim it in the name of the Glorious Ruler of)"
"No, I've already got a settler there."
"Well, I hope he's got warm clothing because I hear nuclear winters can be cold."
Maybe they will have a UN meeting of world leaders for this type of thing. Humilation followed by Annihilation...
ICBMs will hold so much more meaning to me...
