I know that armies don't take up the same space as single units on ships etc., but do they count as one unit in terms of military costs/support?

AFAIK: each unit will cost one gold and so will the leader .
so an army containing 3 units has an upkeep of 4 gold

and armies do take up space in a transport - so a 4-unit army will take up 5 spots

In Civ3 armies can't go on transports or be airlifted.

If there's enough room, they Can be transported.
but as stated above, a 4 unit army cannot board a galleon(room for 4) , since you need a place for your leader too

your right 'bout airlifting, no can do!
