Guys, I'm starting a different sort of game (I hope). I know that you're both involved in a bunch of other games so I understand that you may not want to participate, but I'd appreciate your input as to rules etc.
You are working on a key issue Spencer. Tech trading makes it much harder to predict how a multiplayer game will turn out and will likely cause the "lead" to oscillate several times during the course of a complete game. SP games were much more predictable and linear. I'm pretty sure that I believe wide open tech trading arrangements are good, and that they are fun, but I'm thinking about it. I admit it is very different from SP, so some won't like it.
I think you're right that the heart of the MP game is the interaction between people. Thats the only thing that keeps me playing civ3. So what I want to prevent while trying a team game is the situation where a couple of more experienced players just team up tech-wise and then just warmonger. Civ is not a wargame and I find it boring to play that way. Unfortunately, it's also the best way to win.
I'm a little concerned about restricting trade between teams altogether (I think we'll end up with waiting for a tech advance to allow 'free trade') I think the idea that captured techs are tradable may help.
I also think we may have the human aspect with the discovery and teamwork that will be necessary to win.
