How does that work? Doesn't everyone need the same patch?

Appearently not. The fact that you can play back and forth between two peeps with 1.21 and 1.27 was not mentioned in the 1.27 patch release; but it is doable, I've been doing it already in a fast paced PBEM I'm in, we have played 5 turns between players with differing patches and it works with no problems.
One player (me) had to upgrade, while another could not, but he decided to try and play anyways and it worked!
