On next study: up to you really; I 've locked myself in on alphabet, which is the first step toward Philo. I definitely think we should be going for Philo, but what we should try to get with it, I'm not sure. If we're going to play it safe and go for Construction, you might want to start on Iron Working - though a detour to a defense tech first, like The Wheel or Warrior Code, wouldn't cost too much.
One possibility would be to go for Construction now, and Republic we could probably get later for cheap if one of us researches it at close to 0 science (taking 50 turns with it, as you get a tech automatically if you put science into it for 50 turns). The gold generated by that person can fund higher science spending by the other, or can just be stored, etc. All sorts of ways to game the system when there are two of us.
Tech slider: Again up to you. I'd advise setting it relatively high, as there's usually not much point in stockpiling gold at this point in the game. There can be advantages to a small stockpile though, since you can start running it down as soon as there's something (buildings or units) to cost you maintenance.
