I got Civ4. What a beautiful game! It looks great on my 22" widescreen monitor. I've started a game and gotten to about 1500bc. I'm playing Isabella. Founded Hinduism, but still haven't done much so far in this game. I don't really know what I'm doing to be honest, kinda learning as I go. Definitely enjoying it though!

We should get a PBEM going. I know Rommel is keen for one.

I'm having difficulties with the civ4 PBEM and MP mechanics. you are supposed to be able to send the save directly from the civ4 interface. It's not working for me or others.

Yokohama was the only other city in strike range. I was hoping you had kept your Samuari in Nagasaki. Interested in a spell of peace perhaps?

I haven't tried to set up a PBEM yet. I was up until about 3am playing civ4 on Sunday night. I'm now at about 1000ad and have so far generated 4 great people. I used 2 for a GA but it didn't seem to work. I also tried a culture bomb but that didn't work either. But yeah, really enjoying it.

Oh, I've been meaning to ask for ages, how did your meeting go regarding your rejected proposals? Did you decide to put your CV out in the end?

yes, i have decided to start looking around. I'm considering both US based and overseas opportunities.

I'm having some difficulty grasping what is necessary in looking overseas -- especially England and China which would be my first two choices.

England it’s fairly easy - there are three ways to land work:

The first is to approach an agency that places people in the kind of work you’re looking for. An agency has a number of clients on their books all doing different projects and the clients tell them the type of people they’re looking for, and the agency matches you up. They make their money by taking a cut of your earnings, usually not more than 10%. With your experience you should be able to get £400 – £500 per day. The downside to all that money is that you’re usually on a week’s notice, or on contracts not more than 6 months or so. It’s great if you want to get experience delivering a range of projects however. To do this option, you need to set up a limited liability company and invoice the agency. There are tax advantages to this approach.

The second is to join a consultancy. This gives you more job security but the pay isn’t so good. Someone with your experience should be able to get around £60k/year, with 5 weeks holiday and all the extras. A down side is that you have to take the projects that the Consultancy gets, and sometimes they aren’t that interesting. If you join a big consultancy however, there is room to grow, and you would probably be at a point where you could source your own work for you and a team. Consultancies often have a lucrative bonus scheme in place if you do this.

The third is to join the management contractor/property developer/client organisation direct. This would require lots of research, but there is usually plenty of info in industry journals etc. I would imagine the pay and conditions would be the same as a consultancy.
