                      I read somewhere on the Community forum awhile back that the size of the threads could impact performance of the site. IIRC, the 500 limit was just a number selected -- kind of at random -- there was nothing magical about that number. The other reason provided seemed to address the system administration of the site -- too many open threads was more difficult to manage.

                      Later I read something about the number of posts in a thread having no impact on the performance. A guy I know at work that's knowledgeable in this type of software agreed that it was unlikely a system resource/performance issue.

                      It's still somewhat of a mystery, but the rule seems to be tradition and ease of management of the site. However, some threads are allowed to go beyond the 500 post limit (i.e. Picture Thread in Community Forum)
