I would sign up for one of these Paddy, but the Phelps-Thorpe title would be too obvious...
Enjoy Slurm - it's highly addictive!

that was the supposed try where the ball fell out of his hands on his way down. there was no downward pressure = no try.

well it certainly looks a tad unstable in his arms....

s'pose he shouldn't be dragging that fella down the field either

                          To clear the confusion:
                          9. Paulse's try:

Percy Montgomery of South Africa races down the touch-line on his right. He passes inside to Breyton Paulse who darts for the goal-line. As he dives over, he is tackled by Marty Holah of New Zealand.

The referee asks the television match official for advice: "Just check the grounding of the ball, please."

That means that the television match official could offer advice only on the grounding of the ball.

                          Law 22.1 Grounding the ball
There are two ways a player can ground the ball.

                          (a) Player touches the ground with the ball. A player grounds the ball by holding the ball and touching the ground with it in in-goal. 'Holding' means holding the ball in the hand or hands, or in the arm or arms. No downward pressure is required.

                          (b) Player presses down on the ball. A player grounds the ball when it is on the ground in in-goal and the player presses down on it with a hand or hands, arm or arms, or the front part of the player's body from waist to neck inclusive.

In Paulse's case the ball makes contact with the ground. Paulse's hands are in contact with the ball when it makes contact with the ground.

If that action of his constituted grounding the ball, it was a try. That it squirts forward afterwards is irrelevant. The try has already been scored.

If a player drops the ball it does not make a try impossible. If he drops it backwards or straight down and then does what is required in (b), he will score a try.

If he drops it forward he will not score a try. It would seem from the angles available that Paulse did not drop the ball forward.

                          Turn Away.

From the angles of the Walkabout bar, and from the curious angles that a beer glass made to the game momentarily every now and again, it seemed that the ball was droped forward.

Holah's left hand with two bandaged fingers pulls Paulse's left shoulder which pulls his arm down away from his body and his left hand comes off the ball. Paulse's right hand is already off the ball due to Holah's impact. The ball is free and travels forward as Paulse falls, and hits the ground and Paulse's hand at the same time. No control, no downward pressure, ball dropped forward.

                              No try!

                              --> onwards
