Did you hear that everyone? bongo is cooking dinner for us!

What's on the menu bongo? I've always wanted to try a good hearty Norwegian elk stake.

I'll be around for 2 more hours or so, then it's to-the-pub o'clock.

Fish today, some good quality filets of cod served with potatoes, grated carrots and lemon sauce. Cod poached for about 10-11 minutes. Delicious

Oh, should you ever happen to drop by I'll try to dig up some elk from the freeze

If I want to make a real effort of it, I could always try to get hold of some the the more offensive food(they are called 'specialities' but that's a lie, they only make it to scare foreigners away )

Is that like seal eyes and stuff? We had a Newfoundland - British Columbia student exchange when I was a high school student. When the B.C. students visited us they were horrified to find rabbit soup on the menu.

Yesterday I asked one of my female students what she had for supper and she said, "Boiled dog meat." Ah, country girls . . . . .

No seal eyes as far as I know...

We got 'lutefisk', fish prepared with lye, almost jelly-like. (I'll eat it if I have to, my mother in law is kind enough to provide me with something else when they're having it.)

And 'Rakefisk', fermented fish. You just let it 'ripen' without access to oxygene. The smell waries from 1800s london sewers to almost neutral, the taste varies a bit as well. I'm happy to eat some of the good one

'Smalahove', sheeps head, severed and roasted on open fire. Some of the tougher guys actually suck up the eyes and brain and stuff. Yuck. Never tasted it, never will.

And then there are the stuff that are actually quite good, but somewhat sensetive of other reasons.
Reindeer, whale and seal to mention some.

Ah, yes. Politically incorrect foods. Newfoundland is often the target of world hate when the seal hunting season starts. We can get whale meat in Korea but I'm not sure where they get it. I heard it's from whales that accidentally get caught in nets but I'm not sure. Perhaps they import it from Japan. The other politically incorrect food in Korea is dog meat, of course.

The easiest way of getting hold of seal meat in norway would be to get a permit and shoot one yourself

We don't club baby seals anymore though.

Whale is available from time to time in the shops, caught the 'normal' way with whaling vessels. Due to the quirks and loopholes of international law, the ban on whaling only apply to those nations that accepted the ban in the first place...needless to say norway is not one of those nations. We don't export any of it though, probably to keep a low profile. I know we could get a fortune by selling the stuff we don't eat anyway to Japan (like whale blubber, yummy )

                        • Its the Smalahove that disgusts me the most. A sheeps head roasted next to a fire you say? I don't think I could eat anything that looks at me while I eat it.
