As Chief of the Maya, I must inform you I had no prior knowledge of this attack, or of any plans to your detriment. In fact I played this turn without knowing anything of the fact, and just read this news before posting this.

Tensions will certainly emerge over the contest for limited resources, but it was believed by us that the Celts and the Iroquois were not close enough for such tensions to emerge yet. Sadly that has not proven the case, and war may taint your lands.

Additionally, perhaps the Iroquois should not look to a conspiracy against them, and instead pay attention to their own history books. It is widely known amongst the Mayan people that Celt visitors to our cities report an unprovoked attack on their people by the Iroquois some generations ago. Maybe this is retribution for just such an ill-advised assault?

        • Ah, and now the forked tongues of the white-man and the meso-american start wagging. Somebody is clearly telling porky pies, as the Maya have been accused of conspiracy by the Celts, to cover their own duplicity.

The peaceful Iroquois people categorically deny any attack upon the Celts in times distant past. The Celts are well aware of our past, as Lord Paddy confirmed it to me himself last night. However for the benefit of Chief MWIA and Councillor Bogor, you should know that Paddy and I played a game of cat and mouse some centuries ago, by pursuing each other's Settlers. My Settler eventually reached the safety of a covering Spearman, while Paddy's unescorted Settler was still exposed to my roaming Warrior and could have been roasted on a spit. I chose however to retain relations with the Celts and to allow the foolish Settler to pass. Thus my anger when Paddy launched this unprovoked attacked on my escorted Settler last turn.

Paddy, deny this truthful history at your own peril of eternal damnation by the gods. You were apologetic last night when we discussed this.....has the morning light changed your view of the world?

MWIA....as an aside, I would appreciate your Javelin Thrower moving from that neutral hill (next to the barb Galley) so my Settler can move there and establish an Iroquois settlement.

                • Is that a declaration of continued hostility Paddy?

So MWIA, where do you sit in all this? I understood we were previously on good terms until you sneakily suggested to Paddy that he attack me. So is this to be an alliance against the Iroquois?

The Mayan people have stated their position before and it seems we must do so again, in clearer terms. There has never been any agreement, official, unofficial, legal or otherwise between the Mayans and any other nation to attack or otherwise to effect the detriment of the Iroquois people, with whom we have always lived in peace. If the Iroquois leader has any kind of document or knowledge to the contrary we suggest you bring it out in the open so that we may discredit it. This is simply nothing in this, and our country is frankly confused and frightened at such suggestions, and we sincerely hope the Iroquois will not do anything rash.

We have to apologise for not seeing your latest request however - it is only after playing and sending the turn that we've noticed it, so the Jav Thrower has not moved. However, we will do so next turn, provided situations do not change.

On a side note, although we move willingly, we would appreciate the Iroquois nation not placing our borders under such aggressive attack from your own settlements. Such things could hardly be tantamount to reassuring any that your best intentions were indeed peaceful.

                      • To Chief MWIA:

The Iroquois are not a rash people, as evidenced by our previously mentioned restraint in dealing with unescorted Celtic Settlers (to our eventual detriment, apparently).

Thank you for agreeing to remove your Javelin Thrower from the hill.....rest assured that the Iroquois have no desire to extend their borders beyond this hill, and we noted that there are substantial lands to your north and north-east....we wish you well in your race with the powerful and formidable Greeks for these lands.

                        To Lord Paddy:

Ah, you grow bellligerent in your old age, great one. We are saddened by your unprovoked aggression, and shall remain wary of any Celtic wanderers from this moment onwards.

                            • Lord Aqua,

we note your words with some relief. The Mayan people are hoping to avoid a war between two peoples as close as ours. As of this turn the Archer has removed himself from that hill, although this will be yet another space very near our capital that is taken by the fast-growing Iroquois nation, when the closest open space for the Mayans is far from our centre.
