Since i'm still paying attention (sort of) to this, you could always do what some other games have done ...
... play all 3
At least for a while, if one or two of them got boring you could agree together to stop the 'extra' games when they get to be too long. But, until about AD 500 or so, these turns are <5 minutes anyways, so you wouldn't find much difficulty playing multiple games at one time. (Heck, if you don't have AP on, even beyond that. )

I think the problem here arose because of the first failed start and then the confusion with the second round.
