As far as I can see, the turn order should be E_T, BigFree, Paddy, Sir Ralph. E_T failed to give his time zone, but he waves an US flag and hence, should play between me (Europe) and BigFree (US west coast). If we don't fix this, chances are, that this game will be very slow (at most 1 turn in 2 days).

    • Hi, can I play?

      • @Sir Ralph: That can likely be rectified.

@Samuel2904: No, sorry, I believe we're too far in on the planning stages to let another player in.

Also, if someone could recommend a free e-mail service I can use with a decent amount of storage space for the use of CC saves, I'd appreciate it.

Also, E_T would be GMT -5.

v1.12 is the official beta. It seems to fix the major problems well. I say use it and upgrade when another release is issued from Firaxis/Breakaway if it is compatible.

ADG has offered a website for us to load the turns to instead of dumping them all on you, Octavian. Can you give us instructions on uploading to your ftp, ADG?

Should we have a contingency plan for what to do if a player's and Octavian's real lives choose to rear their ugly heads at the same time? A second ref or at least someone to hold the passwords in escrow?

SAMUEL2904: If you can find 15 other players interested in a second tournement, I'll referee it for you.
[Hmm, 3 more of these and we can hold a grand championship 3rd round...

              • How to upload to my ftp:

Find some ftp app (like Cute ftp or something)
Copy the following line (But change the DOT to . and such.. .and cut the spaces out) into the "parse url" function most ftp apps have:

ftp COLON BACKSPACE BACKSPACE C3C COLON 3Zti06Md AT ADG DOT sytes DOT net

Create a dir with your own nick (Right click in the window that's not your local machine... in cute ftp it's the one on the right side, and press "new dir")
To transfer files, just find your save in on your local computer (The window on the left side in Cute ftp), and drag/drop to the other window

Please delete your old saves when they're done being used... there's not much space on that HD

To find the saves again, just goto the following site:

                http:\\ADG.sytes.net\Apolyton\Civilization\Tournam ent\YourNick\

If someone can come up with a much better explenation on how to do it: Feel free

                • You probably mean BACKSLASH instead of BACKSPACE, and it's still wrong, because through the internet slashes are to be used. By the way, the hassle of manually maintaining the ftp directory sucks. I will do so, but under protest only. When I said a referee, I meant one per game. Players from other groups can do that.

                  • Do we really have to do all this?

What's wrong with simply running a thread here on poly for each game like any other PBEM. It should be up to the players to keep track. Octavian (or any other referee) only needs to be sent the turn to play if someone is overdue and the other players should pick that up and act on it.

                    Am I missing something here?

It might still if you do that. Next week, I'll be starting a job that works 2 days, then off 2 days, 12 hours shift each day, from 6PM to 6AM.

That's what I thought also, but since I wasn't sure, that's why I made a poll out of it, and it got turned down...

I was just asking if anyone was interested... I defently would prefer the ftp way, since downloading/uploading files attached to emails it very annoying...

The player who gets the save from me, don't get the save in an attachment, but instead he just downloads from a static link, as soon he gets the email that the turn is played.
This only takes about 10% of the time, compared to if I had to use the attachment feature in the email service

And this wasn't supposed to stop the "I've sent the save" threads... those threads should still exist

                        • I think a lot of the players participating in this tournament have some other games running. I think that´s not too difficult to handle another one. I´ve no expirience using an application for ftp, but I think it won´t save such an amount of time. I´m connected to the internet via DSL so uploading the file takes about 3 or 4 seconds. And you still have to write the e-mail to alert the next player.

                          • I agree with Iron Jackson, most of us are playing other PBEM games, and we all have to handle those saves etc.

How secure is the FTP site from others opening your files?
I do not remember actively using one.

Anyway, looking forward to getting this started.

                            • The ftp thing is no problem downloading files (I receive the turn from ADG in one game anyway like this) but there is little difference in uploading compared to sending an attachment (I upload to a yahoo group for one game) for me and my dial up connection.

I suggest this is left to the players in each game to sort out whatever they are comfortable with. Let's get going.

When using hotmail (And I believe several other email services uses the same method), attaching files in emails (compared to just upload to ftp) is too much of a hassle... but I guess if you've never used ftp before (Or only little), it might be too much of hassle to start learning how to use it...
