  • 56k dialup modems & multiplay

ok. how is it, playing with a 56k? this question is for anyone who has one, or has played against someone who uses one.

i need to know if i can start playing online now, or if i should just wait until we get the cable modem installed (approx. 1 month). i realize that it's probably POSSIBLE to play with a 56k, but if it's too annoying, slow, laggy, etc., i'd rather not bother.

looking forward to playing you all at some point!

I think no reply in 3 days says it all really. Some people with cable are complaining, so id wait till you get cable, and possibly the next PTW patch. Of course i havent tried it, but at least im replying. :-) I have 56k so i do feel aggrieved with the current situation, but no cable for me anytime soon. :-( poop

      56k modem...how quaint.

I'd wait for the next patch, THEN ask about 56k modem performance.

WTF? sorry for being so "quaint." that's what i'm stuck with right now. it's not like i eagerly rushed to the store last week and said excitedly, "hook me up with a 56k!!! yeah, boyeeeee!"

I JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF IT WAS EVEN WORTH IT TO TRY MP. APPARENTLY NOT.

Bella Hella, I understand your frustration and I would have to agree - with a 56K modem, you will probably have no luck with an Internet MP game. Hell, I have DSL, and it's touch-and-go with Internet Play.

I would suggest to wait for the next patch. Hopefully internet play will be addressed for 56K modem users.

Somehow I doubt even with a patch civ3 will be playable with a 56K modem.

Play with 56k is now possible with the newest patch. I played a one on one game last night with no AI, simultaneous moves. We were playing elimation on a small map. I even hosted since my opponent crashed when he tried to host. No noticable lag times. Our ping was in the low 200's.

                I have a P4, 1.8GHZ, 512 Mb Ram. Opponent had cable.

i have played against 56k oppenents and while the game is slow, it is playable. My advice, try to play now and then love life when you get fast internet.

All true craftsman, the only advice I have for you is to find another modem player in Brazil, if that doesnt work, have a caiparinho (sorry, the spelling is wrong ).

Perfect! A little bit of "caipirinha", just before a barbecue, whose fire was lit with my 56k modem and the PTW box...

On a serious note: thanks for the advice!

I have DSL, and I experience the same ping problem.
Let's try to play some time.
I have played some games with 56k players and the lag is not good, but it is acceptable.
