  • Why no MP?

I don't see much MP going on. Why is this?

I mean, there were a few problems (like the Gold bug, which ended one of my games), but I thought most of those were fixed?

While I haven't played since last spring, it is more that my housemates don't want to play, than any complete lack of interest on my part (I think it is a combination of things, including my Kaiser like actions).

The Civ MP community - which houses many Apolytoners that primarily MP, such as myself - is over at www.myleague.com/civ3players , and operates out of the Gamespy lobby, primarily.

Civer Dan, myself, and others are all over there - we just got tired of the somewhat lukewarm and occasionally quite rude remarks that "those MP players" get from some members of the Apolyton community, so while we read and post on occasional matters, Civ3 MP - all 1000+ of us - is definitely contained elsewhere.

If by "crashing" you are referring to an "out of synch" error message, then yes, this is an occasional occurence in simultaneous MP games. It usually doesn't happen enough to be a real problem.

Here's what you do: Have the host rehost a game with the same players as though you were starting a new game. Once in the game setup screen, the host then loads the save file called "resynch.sav". The game then loads up and you continue on from where you were.

If all the players and the host are on the ball, it takes all of 5 minutes to continue your game after an out of synch error.

Sorry to hear about those comments, I certainly appreciate contributions you and Motown have made around here in the past.

Does the ladder community evey play turn-based, or are you exclusively simultaneous?

Nah, I've never seen anyone play turn-based. The game takes long enough as it is without that.

Why wouldn't you want to just play at the same time?

When I tried simultaneous, although it was nothing near an RTS clickfest, combat was affected so much by the game mode it needed a very distinct strategy from SP or PBEM. I'd really like to play what would essentially be the SP game (ie discrete combat turns), only against human opponents and not have to deal with the huge lag of PBEM.

Is the turn timer the same length for turn-based? Theoretically, 4 players would mean 4 times as long of a game, but it seems to me that by using the time between active turns to do diplomacy and city maintenence, the time needed to actually move units could be cut down considerably.
