Each was an independent colony prior to Fedralisation of the Nation in 1900.

The rest of the flag has the Southern Cross Constelation on it.

Not sure what is going on in New Zealand... Strange lot ...

as to "Hug an Aussie Day", well as open and happy a people that we are, I would recommend you announce your intention first. Thus giving the bloke or gal the opportunity to stand back... the consequences could be rather unpleasant otherwise.

As to the whole "Hug an Aussie Day", I have never heard of it. Possibly an American friendship thing...

Probably an effort to keep the Australians interested in staying in Iraq for the sake of the alliance. Displays the usual finesse of international diplomacy of late.

Oh, and notice that the Federation Star is "under" the Union Jack
