You always want to get the last word, don't you?
If there's no land left, you don't have to use neither the marines OR tanks. Problem solved

Marines Paratroops Choppers
That's all i can say
They do a tolerable job in rough terrain (esp the paras). The choppers are the worst of the lot and the marines the best. I find that paras and choppers are really good when you want to get troops over water quickly. In my last game an enemy city was across a deep gulf from mine and I would have had to fight a long way around to get to it. I just dumped paras and marines (by chopper) over there and managed to dislodge the infantry and conscripts defending it with the loss of one marine and to repel assaults with fortified paras until I could rush an airport and bring in the rest.
I've actually had some success with using marines for amphibious assaults. They are actually really good at this - I have managed to take out all sorts of things with them (tanks being the best). Although with the discovery of mech inf. they lose most of their value.
I agree with Manya, Marines/Choppers/Paras ain't that good although the graphics are gool (love the 'chute)
Why build marines when you can better spend those hard earned shields on Tanks? I agree that there are situations when they are rather useful (like in Agathon's example) but most of the time I'd rather see my stack of 8 tanks rumble across enemy territory.
Also, I would rather skip Amphibious Warfare and concentrate on other more usefull techs. AW isn't a prerequisite to get to the modern age after all.
Now, modded to 10/8 and 8/10, Marines and Paras are much better

Used marines 2wice like this in my last game. Took 2 coastal cities. Airdropped paras to cut off all land access to the cities first. Yeah, countin' beans the tanks/MA/Mech I are better, but that sure was fun.

Yeah, they are useful. I've decided in future games to keep a force of 7-8 marines which I will move about by air and then transport to use in amphibious assaults. They are at their best when there are lots of islands.
And if you mount an amphibious assault that is one less round of vulnerability before you can airlift in a stack of infantry or mech. inf. Sometimes this counts (even more against a human player I'd say).
Actually my favourite SMAC strategy was to build the Sky Ladder (or whatever it was called) and build stacks of "Drop Behemoths" which I would orbitally insert 20 or so of around the base I wished to conquer. Paras recreate that fun somewhat.

I think they've always been thus in the Mac version.
Anyway, the Robotic Artillery is clearly the coolest unit in the game IHMO. I have travelling stacks of 6 or 7 which I use to completely smash up enemy columns.

Never had a game where I could get them into play before it ended, but maybe I'll play past the end turn this time (if necessary) and see what they're like.
(assume you mean radar artillery? Oh--What difference does it make.)

Yeah - the ones you get with Robotics. I love them - even more than Stealth Bombers.
I turn off Space Race and Diplomatic Victory so I usually get to play with them.
Yea the Un should come further into the game, if not is over waay before you get to any more techs, i never EVER got to Robotics

What's your problem!?
Go into the editor, Units:Unit Abilities (lower left) and make Tanks, Panzer, Mech Infantry and Modern ArmorWheeled (Ctrl-click!!) so they need road in mountains/jungle.
While it adds flavor, by this time all the AI territory will be railroaded so the change will have no effect unless the improvements are destroyed. YOUR territory will also, unless you micromanage your workers (I do).
